Material of Self

Material of Self (2022), Watercolor, Pencil, and Mixed media on Cardboard

The metaphysical question of what components make up the human- beyond our physical bodies remains a daunting question. This piece offers an interpretation of what being a human and death entails physically, metaphorically, spiritually, and philosophically. I used watercolor to emulate our evanescent nature as we inevitably fade out of existence. The left-hand side of the piece showcases the more “objective” part of the self and the world, represented by the organic grass and bones of a skeleton. The right-hand side portrays the most mysterious and abstract component of ourselves (the soul).
